× before alan gray turned eighteen he knew that he wanted to join the army and make a difference in the world and his high school sweetheart, anna roberts, was so proud of her boyfriend that she would have done anything for him. once alan turned eighteen his parents couldn't help but brag to all their friends about their perfect son and how he was going to be something and get out of their small hometown in georgia.
· their bragging came to an abrupt stop when anna informed alan that she was pregnant and his world came crashing down. being the old fashioned georgia boy that he was, he suggested that they get married and two months after their wedding he was sent off to boot camp and anna moved in with his parents since her own disowned her and were ashamed of her. they no longer claimed their only daughter because of her sins.
× two months after alan returned from boot camp his daughter, virginia gray, was born. her parents were pleased despite how young they were and loved her unconditionally. she quickly became her daddy's "little princess" and she would attach herself to his leg whenever he was at home. anyone who was observant realized that anna gray was jealous of her daughter and hated all the attention that alan gave her.
· when gini was six years old her father found himself away more than he would have liked and rarely got to see his daughter or his wife. anna gray became a secret alcoholic and the first person to notice was little gini who was the target for all of her abuse. although it was not physical abuse, it still affected gini emotionally and mentally. she didn't like to see her mom with a bottle in her hand because she knew that night she would go to bed after being yelled at for hours about how she was the worse thing that could ever happen to the family.
× gini went from being an outspoken, energetic child to a quiet, shy child who wouldn't say one thing in her mother's presence without her mother speaking to her first. she did everything her mom told her to do in case her yelling turned into hitting one day. she was criticized by her mom and was often told that she wasn't pretty enough to be considered part of the family. her self esteem was non-existent and by the time she was twelve she was cast off in school as the "weird kid" and many of the kids from her old school had witnessed how cruel her mother was to her, especially during field trips where her mother would refuse to buy her anything from the zoo or aquarium they visited.
· at the end of her seventh grade year her mother pushed her off onto her aunt who lived in longport and she found herself at a new school where no one knew her past and for once in her life she wasn't scared to speak up in class. she had no problem fitting in with the people at her new school and begin getting into activities she had never imagined she'd be able to do with her crazy mother on her back.
× a few years later and a month before her sixteenth birthday, her father was in an accident over in iraq and they sent him back home to the united states. he could no longer spend time out of the country because of his injury, however minor it was, and quickly settled down into an office job in longport where he recruited high school students into the army.
· a week after her seventeenth birthday, gini found herself in an ice cream shop where she was contemplating between what kind of ice cream she wanted and met paulie. he bought her his two favorite types of ice cream and she thanked him, never imagining that she would see him again in her life. somehow they struck up a conversation outside the ice cream shop and began making fun of an old couple who were flirting awkwardly fifty feet away from them. it took them over twenty minutes to realize that the couple was their parents and after that, they accepted the fact that one day they might be step-siblings.
× two years later and a few months before gini turned nineteen her father remarried and she gained herself her first step-sibling and from what she can tell he will be her only one. in order for gini to accept him she believes he bought her her cheagle, a half chihuahua and half beagle, monster grand theft auto gray in order for her to accept him. she loves monster so much that if their house was on fire she would save him and herself before she saved any of her other things. he tends to take all of paulie's things and hide them around the house and she will often find paulie stalking the little dog in order to get his things back. it makes her laugh more than anything and she won't admit it to paulie's face but she's glad that he's the one who is her step brother. she recently acquired another puppy named twiggy sassypants gray who she loves just as much as she does monster.
